Man crushed to death when cargo container slipped from truck

Trucking accidents don't just involve cases where a truck driver collides with another person. Sometimes, it's the items the truck is carrying that cause the real devastation. That's what happened in this case in Long Beach, California, where a man was crushed to death after being struck by a cargo container while riding his bicycle.

If you've ever traveled behind a large tractor trailer carrying goods, you know there is a risk of those goods coming loose. They shouldn't, if safety precautions are followed. However, if they do, you can take legal action to seek compensation. The victim's family may choose to do that in this case because this wasn't the first time a cargo container had fallen off a truck nearby. Last time, no one got hurt.

The driver was passing the bicyclist when the cargo container suddenly came loose. It had been on a flatbed truck. Normally, an 18-wheeler carries this kind of cargo, but the truck drivers who carry cargo are currently on strike. Because of that, flatbeds are being used with tethering to hold the cargo containers. Unfortunately, the weight may be too much, allowing the goods to slip free from the tethers.

The container was said to weigh around 40,000 pounds, which is more than enough to kill a person crushed under it. Investigators have spoken to the driver to try to find out what went wrong, but no charges have been filed as of the time of the news report on Oct. 27. If any trucking violations have taken place, the companies responsible could be held liable for the man's death.
