10 lives lost in pair of fatal wrecks separated by mere hours

A pair of fatal motor vehicle accidents in California -- one in Irvine and one outside of Chino -- claimed 10 lives total, with five people dying in each crash. The Irvine crash only involved one vehicle. A 16-year-old was driving a number of teens home from a Halloween-themed park when the vehicle suddenly went out of control. Five of the teens died under circumstances that we would rather not rehash here. The wreck is under investigation.

The other crash, in Chino, involved three vehicles on a two-lane road. Details in this wreck are unclear, but another five people died in this crash, four of whom were in one of the vehicles.

These are two terrible accidents that claimed far too many lives, and the fact that they happened on the same day -- within mere hours of each other -- makes it all the more tragic. If there's anything to take away from this wreck besides the tragedy of it all, it is that we all need to be safer when we drive on the road.

It's easy to say and it may seem like the simplest concept in the world, but it really is a statement that needs to be heeded. No one bats an eyelash anymore when they hear about car accidents. They happen all the time. Tens of thousands of people lose their lives in car accidents every year in the United States.

The only way to curb these fatalities is to respect the rules of the road and to do everything in your power to remain focused on the road.
