Safe driving: Tips for a safe summer

The summer is here, and that means that more people are going to be heading out on the roads. Whether you're heading to the beach, driving to a lake or going to work, you know that the extra traffic can cause congestion and accidents. How can you help prevent accidents? Here are some tips.

Don't drive when you're tired. Drowsy driving is a serious problem; when you're only half-awake or nodding off, you miss simple things like slowing traffic or stop signs, and that can lead to accidents. Even if you're awake and had a good night of sleep before getting into your car, take a break every few hours. This will help prevent you from getting tired on the drive.

Stay off your cellphone. Texting, talking and other activities can be distractions, so it's best to avoid using any technology you don't need to use. If you do need to place a call, make sure you pull over or have a one-touch or voice-activated phone ready.

Never drink before you start out on your drive; drinking and driving leads to many injuries and deaths every year. Intoxication can make it hard to concentrate, slow your reaction speeds and even make you pass out, resulting in an accident.

Finally, keep an eye out for bad weather. Know which radio station to tune into if the weather gets bad on your route.

If you're hit by a dangerous driver, remember that you have the right to seek compensation. The driver's negligence resulted in your injuries, so you shouldn't have to pay for your medical bills or other financial losses.
