California roads perilous for motorcyclists

May was Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in California and throughout the United States, but statistics show that the country's most populous state was anything but safe for motorcyclists in 2016. The state's large population and mild weather mean that there are many motorcycles on the roads all year long. And, unfortunately, that translates to a large number of motorcycle accidents.

According to a recent report issued by the Governors Highway Safety Association, California had the second highest number of motorcycle fatalities in the United States in 2016. In that year, 566 motorcyclists died on the state's roads. Florida led the nation in motorcycle fatalities with 574. Nationwide, almost 5,300 motorcyclists were killed on U.S. roadways in 2016.

As recently as 1998, motorcycle fatalities accounted for only 5 percent of all traffic deaths in the United States. In 2016, 14.1 percent of all traffic deaths were motorcyclists. The percentage is even higher when looking only at the state of California. In 2016, motorcycle fatalities made up 15.1 percent of all traffic deaths in the state. Nevada had the highest percentage of motorcycle fatalities in the nation, with 22.6 percent.

On the bright side, preliminary statistics show that motorcycle fatalities in California are likely to be down by almost 29 percent for 2017. According to GHSA, only 406 motorcycle fatalities were reported in that year, however, this number has not yet been adjusted for underreporting. Fortunately, even after adjustment, the number of motorcycle fatalities in 2017 will be significantly lower than in the previous year. Hopefully, the downward trend will continue.

If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident caused by another driver, you may wish to contact an attorney. An attorney can answer any questions you may have about your case and can help you file a lawsuit to recover compensation for your injuries.
